Week 16: Preparing for Cross-Examination

๐Ÿ“† 11.01.21 – 15.01.21 ๐Ÿ“†

To whoever is reading this,

This week was definitely a surreal one for me and gave me a great opportunity to reflect:

If you’ve been following my blog since the beginning, you’ll be very familiar with my court case. If not, in a nutshell, my crazy ex-landlord and I have been in a court battle for just over a year now. All because I left after only 2 months of living in the worst accommodation in London – having to share with random men that would walk into my room in the middle of the night, into the bathroom when I was showering with only a glass (yes, glass?!) door for privacy, because she played her music until 3 am every night before my exams…but I’ll stop here as otherwise it’ll turn into a page of me ranting.

At my very first telephone hearing, I was terrified. Practically crying when I was talking. Super embarrassing. Thank god no one will ever hear that, they’d think I’d make the worst lawyer ever! It was so long and so complicated the judge had to re-schedule a second hearing just for cross-examination. I won’t go into it here as I’ve already explained in depth in my blog; but I remember my barrister saying after that I was a ‘born litigator.’ He was joking, of course, but it just showed how far I’d come since the first hearing. After only 3 months of working with my team, my confidence had grown like crazy! It’s funny, they probably have no idea how much of an impact they’ve had on me – that’s why if you’re applying for a training contact, my best advice would be to be selective. Make sure you’re applying to a firm for the right reasons, not simply to get a job.

My knowledge of the court process has also increased – True, I didnโ€™t have much experience of litigation before i started this job, so any spare time I had, I used to look back at old cases (yep, Iโ€™ve always been that one with the terrible social life) to familiarize myself with different situations, see how theyโ€™re handled and how to phrase emails etc. Iโ€™ve learned more in these 3 months than I did in 4 years of law school!

So, however crappy this year has been (I’ve been trying to think of a more sophisticated word, but crappy really is the best), there must be a God out there. How is it I thought I’d hate litigation, become so stressed fighting my own court case, end up in the litigation team, working with the most amazing people? And big surprise, now I love it.

Anyway, cross-examination also lasted all day so closing arguments are being re-scheduled. Guess I should probably go catch up on work now!

Love Ang xx
